My hair is …
Natural knotty
Fluffy frizzy
My Hair is Beautiful showcases photos of young African Canadian children in various hair styles, from “fluffy” and “frizzy” to “tucked” and “braided”. Sparse text lends inspiration to powerful pictures of smiling, confident toddler girls. A mirror for self-reflection is provided at the end.
This country’s children’s literature still does not seem to adequately reflect the diversity in Canadian society, hence this book is a valuable addition to the body of works meant for the youngest children. It confirms the cruciality of minority children seeing themselves in stories. A book for all children’s library collections.
